How NetApp Hybrid Cloud Helped a Healthcare Organization Boost Reliability and Performance

Mount Sinai Health System is an integrated healthcare system serving the New York City area with 8 hospital campuses and a large, regional footprint that is always expanding. Mount Sinai needs to use technology to increase efficiencies and scalability, improve quality of care and patient outcomes, and expand access to care services throughout an expansive clinical network.

As a major healthcare provider in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, Mount Sinai can’t afford any downtime. To maintain high levels of availability, Mount Sinai needs technology that is high performing, secure, and capable of scaling to support the growth of the health system.

To provide the highest quality and most expedient patient care, Mount Sinai needed to rethink its approach to cloud services.

Performance and Data Protection Challenges

As the Associate Director of Technology at Mount Sinai Health System, Melvin Pena is responsible for storage, backup, and data management across the entire Mount Sinai system. Previously, Mount Sinai used cloud services but experienced latency, performance, and data access issues, which is a major liability for such a robust healthcare system. Mount Sinai must be available 24/7/365 to serve patients, and when patients arrive, their data must be immediately accessible so they can receive the best care.

Mount Sinai is also continuously expanding, adding more clinical sites. High-performance solutions were needed to keep up with the rate of growth and the increased number of patients. Mount Sinai also needed backup and disaster recovery services to protect patient data in electronic health records (EHRs), stay compliant, and allow the medical system to recover from power failures.

Despite latency issues with a previous cloud services provider, Mount Sinai knew it needed new cloud capabilities that could adapt to changing cloud environments and on-premises functions. Mount Sinai needed a cloud services provider that could improve uptime to 99.9%, move data closer to end users in a secure and high-performing fashion, and offer managed services assistance.

Finding the Solution in NetApp Hybrid Cloud

With the NetApp Hybrid Cloud, Mount Sinai was able to leverage a robust hybrid cloud infrastructure to unify data between data centers and its choice of cloud environments using a data fabric. NetApp provides a lower cost, ONTAP data management software solution for easily moving data and workloads wherever they are needed throughout the health system. Additionally, the NetApp Hybrid cloud includes Keystone, which allows Mount Sinai to adopt a cloud-like storage as a service (SaaS) consumption model.

A Partnership that Delivered Results

From the start, Mount Sinai saw its latency issues improve significantly. Mainline Information Systems worked proactively with Mount Sinai to design and architect its storage solutions and identify which workloads were suited to a true hybrid cloud solution versus a native cloud.

We have a strong relationship that keeps growing, and we continue to work on more projects. I have absolutely no complaints, only positives, about our relationship with Mainline.

After adopting NetApp Hybrid Cloud, all Mount Sinai’s departments experienced better performance, reduced downtime, and higher reliability and availability. Mainline even provided step-by-step diagrams to keep management and CIOs up to speed with the technical changes to Mount Sinai’s environment.

With NetApp Hybrid Cloud for data protection and disaster recovery, Mount Sinai achieved faster recovery times along with successful failover. As Pena added, “We made a seamless switchover during an outage with NetApp systems. We had a major power issue and NetApp systems took a minimal amount of time to recover due to their resiliency.”

Of the successful partnership between Mainline and Mount Sinai, Pena states, “We have a strong relationship that keeps growing, and we continue to work on more projects. I have absolutely no complaints, only positives, about our relationship with Mainline.”
