Technological Singularity
“Technological Singularity,” or simply “the singularity” is a term I learned today. It is the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) to where it can improve upon itself and therefore exponentially increase in intelligence irreversibly and uncontrollably—an artificial super-intelligence (ASI). It is perceived that this will have unforeseeable consequences on civilization. I mean, that isn’t anything new if you’ve watched a single dystopian sci-fi movie since the 60s. Stanley Kubrick may have gotten it partially right that the Hal’s of the future will take over—albeit under slow, put you to sleep direction. Terminator certainly improved on that genre— less English accented passive aggressive evil and more German accented direct action.
Are we really heading there? Consider this sequence of AI technology:
- 1951 Farranti Mark I and the beginnings of AI
- 1990s Chinook and Deep Blue winning at checkers and chess
- 2011 IBM Watson winning Jeopardy!
- 2022 ChatGPT launch
Are we accelerating towards SkyNet (Terminator) and the singularity? I shouldn’t get so dramatic. The AI models of today have a lot to learn before we get there. We are also aware that we need to be responsible and careful stewards of the tech of tomorrow.
