Everybody backs up. It’s a given. Then those backups wait to serve us at a later date. Hopefully, they never have to be used; and hopefully, they are ready and viable when they’re called upon. Isn’t there something we can do with those backups that will benefit both IT and the rest of the business? Commvault Activate answers that question “Yes” in a few different ways that we’re here to discuss.

Commvault Activate is a suite of three solutions that drive actions based on data insights.

Those three solutions are:

  1. Commvault File Storage Optimization
  2. Commvault Data Governance
  3. Commvault eDiscovery & Compliance

Let’s take a look at each of these solutions to consider how they might benefit you and your business and better inform your data-related decisions.

Commvault File Storage Optimization

Unstructured data sprawl is a problem that we’ve sort to deal with in a few different ways. Compression and deduplication are simple ways to lessen the money you spend on storage systems, but that doesn’t address the problem at its core. You need to find data in all its locations, classify and prioritize it, enforce retention rules, and eliminate any data you no longer need.

Using File Storage Optimization, a full index of data from structured and unstructured sources as well as backups is created. With this index you can restrict access to sensitive information or flag data sets for service-level agreements and retention policies. There are dashboards included that will allow you to search and filter details such as:

  • Inactive users and their orphaned data
  • Sensitive files that require enhanced security
  • Duplicate files that could be deleted

Now you will be able to fully implement role-based file and data access for granular and secure control of business data.

Commvault Data Governance

Every business defines data sensitivity in different ways and sometimes that definition comes from regulation like HIPAA or PCI. With those definitions in place, we can identify matching data sets and commit to both plan and action. Commvault Data Governance enables data classification based on those regulatory definitions and your own customizable definitions.

A full index of data from structured and unstructured sources as well as backups is created. With this index you identify sensitive or critical data that meets any of the definitions we’ve listed above. There are dashboards included that will allow you to categorize and filter data. Then you can create a plan with actions that may include:

  • Reduce and prevent risks by leakage of sensitive data
  • Achieve and maintain compliance with data privacy regulations

Using Commvault Data Governance, you will now be able to define, find, and manage private or sensitive data.

Commvault eDiscovery & Compliance

Businesses can be requested by the court, regulatory compliance, or legal counsel to find or hold data. The IT organization is typically tasked with this action, and the data can be located across any and all locations. In some cases, IT is further tasked to proactively protect key data sets that have been identified. Regulations like GDPR and CCPA call on business for thorough responses to policy and enforcement of certain data standards. Organizations need an efficient way to respond today as well as a solution that will meet the emerging standards of tomorrow.

Commvault eDiscovery & Compliance capabilities enable organizations to quickly identity and locate sensitive data. As in both cases above, a full index of data from structured and unstructured sources, as well as backups is created. With this index you identify sensitive data that meets criteria listed above. There are dashboards included that will allow you to:

  • Assign search functionality to roles like legal teams or data privacy officers
  • Redact sensitive data before export
  • Automate workflows for tasks such as archive, erase, move, or audit (review and approval) directly from the included dashboards
  • Assure, maintain, and document the digital chain of custody, critical for preserving digital evidence

Proving compliance and conducting future eDiscovery is now achievable.
