Storage Engineer
Dell EMC PowerProtect DD is now setting the bar for data management from edge to core to cloud, giving you everything you need to protect a modern data center. PowerProtect DD is labeled as cloud-enabled, but what exactly does that mean? Currently, PowerProtect DD supports Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, AWS GovCloud, Azure GovCloud, Google Cloud, VMware Cloud (VMC), Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS), and Virtustream Storage Cloud. This multi-cloud functionality simplifies management of distributed data, supporting enterprises that are leveraging a number of cloud offerings. Dell EMC PowerProtect DD allows this via integrated cloud tiering so you can protect data on as many clouds as you need to, all from one GUI. These cloud tiers are available in t-shirt sizes of 16TBs, 64TBs, and 96TBs, so you can choose the capacity that best fits your needs.
Some other cloud features include:
Cloud Storage
Dell PowerProtect DD can be used for long-term retention (LTR) or disaster recovery (DR), moving data from expensive production storage to the lowest cost storage available—the cloud. It’s simple and easy to use too. In just three clicks you can failover an appliance, and it only takes two clicks to fail back. Talk about clean and simple!
Retention Lock Governance
This is supported both on-prem and in the cloud, and prevents files from being modified or deleted from a user-defined retention policy. The lock can be applied to the file level, which sounds like another great layer of defense from ransomware and malware, while meeting SEC 17a-4(f) compliance rules.
Security and Key Management
An essential topic to all cloud discussions, Dell EMC PowerProtect DD supports Key Management Interop Protocol (KMIP), allowing you to keep your keys on-prem (this is where they should always be kept, not in the cloud, and you should never allow the cloud provider to manage them.) Dell EMC PowerProtect DD supports Enterprise Key Servers (EKS) such as Thales Gemalto, SKLM, and RSA, so you do not have to spend IT budget for another tool, just integrate with it.
Other great features have existed for years in the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD platform. For example, interoperation with all major backup software packages, integration with Oracle RMAN, end-to-end data verification which ensures the data is correct and recoverable from every level of the system, and the ability to use storage protocols such as Fibre Channel, CIFS, NFS, and even NDMP.
Are you striving for data protection that includes cloud functionality? If so, you can leverage Dell EMC PowerProtect DD as your backup target and then add cloud features for more functionality. This eliminates the need for one-off appliances and islands of storage just for backup repositories while providing more resiliency to your most valued asset, data!
Summary
In today’s complex world, do not wait for an event that calls for backup and disaster recovery before you decide to upgrade to the leading data protection platform, because at that point it is too late. When you select the proven industry leader, Dell EMC PowerProtect DD, you get data protection, long-term retention, and connectivity to multi-cloud environments. When you consolidate to a common data protection platform you can reduce your islands of storage and the associated technical debt and free up administration time for more critical designs.
